At Room to Escape, each group gets three free hints to use at any time during your escape. Beyond that, you can “play to win” an additional three hints by deducting minutes from your time left. But every group has at least three hints at their disposal. How should you use these precious clues? Read on to find out.
- Don’t wait too long to ask for a hint. If ten minutes have passed and you’re still stuck on the same puzzle or lock, it’s probably time to use a hint. When you’re timed, every second counts, and chances are you’ll end up asking for a hint on this puzzle at some point if you’re already so stumped. It’s best to get your hint early and focus on solving the puzzle rather than being stuck sitting there, helpless.
- Don’t argue about when to use your hint. Some groups spend anywhere from thirty seconds to two minutes debating whether or not they should use a hint on a certain puzzle. Yes, you don’t want to waste a hint on something you genuinely think you can solve, but you also don’t want to waste your time arguing about it. Ask first, regret asking later.
- Use ALL of your hints. You don’t get extra points for finishing the room without them. While your pride may take a hit by having to ask for help, you’ll be able to get farther in the room if you stop resisting the urge to use a hint. If you make it through to the last five or ten minutes with all three free hints left, and it’s getting down to the wire - don’t delay, just use them!
- Don’t stress about what hint to ask for. You don’t need to decide to ask about a certain box or a certain lock unless you really feel it’s necessary. Our Game Master keeps track of your group’s progress as they watch you, so they know what hint to give you to help you solve what you’re stuck on. And if you’re stuck on two or more puzzles at once, they’ll give you the hint that is most vital - or the hint that has more frequently helped other groups escape.
In the end, it’s all about whether or not you had fun. And if your fun will be ruined by asking for a hint, that’s fine! You don’t have to ask. But if you’re stuck and frustration is rising, remember that hints are friendly pushes to get you moving towards solving the more exciting and challenging puzzles that our rooms have to offer. So keep these tips in mind, and you’ll be sure to use those hints wisely when your time is ticking.
