Have you ever considered taking steps to strengthen your memory? With a little effort, memory is a skill that can be improved. A better memory could be used for things like remembering what’s on your to-do list, knowing when to wish people a “Happy Birthday” and most importantly, winning at escape room games. At Room To Escape, we love seeing people win! That’s why we compiled this list of quick tips to help you improve your memory:
- Do mental math. Mental math is the kind you do in your head. Think back to when you memorized your multiplication tables. (It was probably around fourth grade.) The task seemed daunting at first, but over the course of several weeks your memory for one-digit and two-digit multiplication improved and so did your speed. Mental math is a great exercise for strengthening your memory muscle.
- Try to memorize your grocery list. Start with five items. Look at the list and see if you can remember all five items one hour later. The next day, try six items, then seven, eight, and so on. Over time you’ll increase your recall and improve your ability to retain listed information.
- Consider a paid service. Apps like Luminosity and Elevate combine fun and research to help you boost your brain power. The blog Techlicious offers a list of several brain-training apps available for purchase.
- Exercise your body. Physical activity increases blood flow to the brain. Harvard Medical School recommends exercise as a way to combat “the brain fog that comes with age.” (source: https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/regular-exercise-changes-brain-improve-memory-thinking-skills-201404097110). Numerous academic journal articles support this statement, including this one, published in Cell Biology in 2016. The study’s research team found that physical exercise led to a specific neurotransmitter release in the brain.
