While winning isn’t everything when playing an escape game, we all know that’s what most people’s end goal really is. Although we like to encourage fun and enjoyment for everybody during our games, we also like to cheer you on and help you to escape in time since we know that is what you really want to do! One of the ways we’re helping you today is to inform you of some of silly mistakes that people tend to make, and that are actually quite easy to avoid with a little heads-up. So here’s your heads-up! Keep in mind these four common mistakes that many people make when playing an escape game for the first time.
1. Everybody working on the same thing. While we encourage teamwork and working together, this does not mean that everybody should focus on the same tasks. We actually recommend that you divvy up the tasks and have different people work on different puzzles, challenges, or searches. Remember, you only have ONE hour, and you can’t even imagine how quickly this time goes by. By having different people work on different tasks at the same time, you are able to increase productivity and efficiency and therefore increase your chances of escaping. So go about your escape the logical way… split up!
2. Not looking carefully enough. Although the room and everything inside of it can be quite overwhelming and intimidating at first, try not to get caught up in the excitement and uncertainty of it all. It’s easier said than done, I know. Start your search right away and don’t forget that some of the most important clues may be the smallest, most difficult clues to find. Don’t be afraid to get down on your hands and knees and get your hands a little bit dirty. Look inside of things, behind things, underneath things. In fact, if nobody has told you specifically not to touch something, then search it! Then, when you think you’ve looked everywhere possible, look again!
3. Forgetting about a clue. This one sounds silly, doesn’t it? You must be thinking, “How could I possibly forget about a clue that I found. That’s the whole point of the game, isn’t it?” You honestly would not even believe how often this happens! People find clues, set them down somewhere, and completely forget about them just minutes later. If you happen to find a clue or solution before you are ready for it, we recommend keeping everything in one central location. This helps you to remember everything, and makes everybody else aware of what is discovered as well.
4. Waiting too long to ask for a hint or not asking at all. Some people might feel like asking for hints is cheating or taking the easy way out. What?! No way! It is definitely NOT cheating! That’s why we offer them to you! If you find yourself at a stand-still with nowhere to go, just put your pride aside and ask for a hint for crying out loud! No one is going to think any less of you, and if that’s what you’re afraid of, then just don’t tell them that part! Then there are those teams who just wait too long to ask for a hint. Remember, you only have one hour! As a rule of thumb, we recommend asking for a hint if you find that you haven’t made any progress within the last five or ten minutes.
