Perhaps you haven’t played an escape room, or even heard of one up until now? Or maybe you have played one, and you didn’t do as well as you were hoping to do? Well, here are some tips to help all of you who are new to the escape room world, as well as those of you who simply didn’t measure up the first time around. To the latter… better luck next time!
1. What the the world is an escape room?!
If you’ve never even heard of an escape room, or you’ve heard of them but still have no idea what one is, you should probably start by reading our first blog, “Escape Room?...What’s that?” This should help to at least get you familiar with the whole escape room concept.
2. Choose your teammates wisely.
This is a make-or-break factor! Seriously, your fate lies in the hands of not only yourself, but of your teammates as well. You should aim for a good mix of people, each possessing a different kind of “smart.” Whatever kind of “smart” you don’t have, look for someone else who does have it. In addition, you’re also going to want a group of people who are capable of working well together. Leave your bossy, attention-seeking friends out of this one!
3. Don’t dress to impress!
Trust me, there is no such thing as a fancy escape room! And unless you’re using an escape room adventure as a first date, there is probably nobody that you’re going to need to impress either. Just dress comfortably. After all, you may be crawling around on the floor quite a bit!
4. Dive in head first.
As soon as you enter, start searching, solving, opening, closing, lifting, crawling… whatever you need to do! The only thing you can do wrong is to sit around like a bump on a log. That won’t help anyone or anything. Clues won’t be found, puzzles won’t be solved, and your team won’t escape if you don’t participate!
5. Don’t overlook the obvious.
Not EVERYTHING is super hidden and tricky, so don’t assume that everything in the room is there to throw you off course. Sometimes you have to try the obvious answers before applying some strange logic to it. In other words, don’t over think it.
6. Although it should go without saying: don’t be reckless and destructive.
The creators of the establishment most likely put a lot of hard work, time, and money into the escape room that you’re playing. So play nicely and treat it accordingly. Avoid playing too rough and purposefully ruining or breaking things.
7. Secrets don’t make friends. Nor do they make you win.
Listen, you’re playing a TEAM game. You obviously can’t be very successful in this case if you’re keeping secrets from your own teammates! Unfortunately, there is usually that one guy who thinks he can win the game by himself. Don’t be that guy.
8. If you’re shy, don’t be. And if you’re loud, be quiet and listen for once!
To all of you shy, quiet people, SPEAK UP! Who cares if you don’t know the correct answer each and every time. At least you’re participating and that’s the fun part. Just speak your mind and have fun! And to the opposite - the loud and obnoxious bunch - HUSH. Just hush. Being loud doesn’t always make you correct. You can certainly get your point across in a more civilized (quiet) manner. Not to mention, you have to let those quiet players speak up too!
9. They’re pretty darn hard, and you’ll probably lose.
Sorry for the lack of sugar-coating, but it’s true. Typically, only 15%-50% of gamers are successful in escaping from escape rooms. So if you don’t escape within your allotted time frame, don’t feel bad. The games are actually very challenging. This is what makes them so fun!
10. Relax and have fun!
It’s a game! Escape rooms were created for entertainment, and that is usually why most people sign up… to have fun! If you don’t allow yourself to let loose and have fun, you probably won’t. Go into the game, expecting nothing more than to just have fun with the people around you, and you won’t be disappointed!
